Asia Pacific Advancing Net Zero

With 60 per cent of the world’s population (4.3 billion people) already living in the Asia Pacific region, and with more than 2 billion living in urban areas, the region has 16 of the world’s 28 mega-cities (cities with 10 million or more inhabitants). The urban population is expected to reach 3.3 billion by 2050, adding further demand for buildings. In 2018 alone, almost half of the world’s 281 natural disaster events occurred in the region including 8 of the 10 deadliest with an increasing number of these events being linked to environmental degradation and climate change. The annual economic impacts from disaster risk are predicted to be USD 675 billion. This emergency calls for urgent action now. We must achieve net zero emissions by 2050 while ensuring a high quality of life for people, minimising negative impacts on the environment, and maximising economic opportunities. This is why WorldGBC’s Asia Pacific region is prioritising action on Net Zero Carbon. In 2020, thanks to the support of WeMeanBusiness and the Ramboll Foundation, as well as corporate partners such as AGC, Akzo Nobel, China Light and Power (CLP) and Ronald Lu & Partners (RLP), the WorldGBC Network in Asia Pacific published the Asia Pacific Embodied Carbon Primer. The Primer presents the scope of actions needed in the region to transition the building sector to a low/zero carbon industry. Our 2021 Asia Pacific Net Zero program focuses on supporting actions to reduce carbon across the whole life cycle of buildings.Key programme components include:Whole life carbon webinar series to advance key actions from the primerDesigning a Net Zero regional award categoryAn international Net Zero Conference in Hong KongBuilding the capacity of Net Zero teams within our GBCsSupporting companies in becoming Net Zero Carbon Building Commitment signatoriesContributing regional insights into WorldGBC’s Beyond the Business Case reportSupporting development of the WorldGBC ANZ AcademyRegional insights into WorldGBC’s Whole Life Carbon CommitmentWe would like to thank all of our partners for making this work possible and bringing us closer to our collective goals. If you are interested in becoming a WorldGBC Asia Pacific Net Zero partner please contact our Director of Engagement & Networks, Dominika Czerwinska [email protected]
